Update DDoS Mitigation and Blackholing

Status Quo, Standardization und Future Development

DDoS attacks hitting networks are growing larger and larger every year. As seen in our last workshop this is a serious problem for network and their costumers. Countermeasures could be implemented at different places - usually a combination of several is a good strategy. In this workshop we are going to present the lastest developments and experiences from an operators and the IXPs perspective. Together with you we want to discuss strategies, best practices and needs on the topics. So your input is highly appreciated.

Attendance is free of charge for members of eco and DE-CIX costumer. Please contact for VIP code.

Please note: On 29 June, DE-CIX is organizing a technical meeting for DE-CIX customers in Frankfurt.

RINEX @DE-CIX: One week of mutual learning

In August, the DE-CIX team in Frankfurt hosted team members of RINEX, the Rwanda Internet Exchange. DE-CIX had invited them to come for one week to exchange knowledge: For RINEX to learn from DE-CIX’s experience in setting up and operating Internet exchanges, and for DE-CIX to learn more about the challenges in the African interconnection landscape, especially in Rwanda and East Africa.

“A big challenge for us in Rwanda is to educate people about the benefits of peering. We have a long way to go to grow the exchange and we seize the chance to talk to established exchanges like DE-CIX and learn from their experience,” stated Ghislain Nkeramugaba, CEO of Ricta, the Rwanda Information & Communication Technology Association that operates the Rwanda Internet exchange.

Claudine Sugira, Marketing, PR, and Operations Manager at Ricta, added: “Having the opportunity to stay a whole week at DE-CIX helped us to gain detailed insight in all processes from network engineering topics to customer support, from sales to marketing, in how to best drive forward the development of an Internet exchange.”

The visit was initiated in April 2016. RINEX was organizing a study tour to European Internet exchanges, supported by the African Union Commission. They contacted DE-CIX through the Tanzania Internet exchange (TIX), DE-CIX’s partner in the Euro-IX Mentor-IX Program.

Straight away we invited RINEX for a one-week training visit, as DE-CIX is dedicated to enabling the best possible IX services for networks worldwide; either by operating its own exchanges, assisting others to build up new Internet exchanges (e.g. angonix) or by knowledge transfer.

We, for our part, also learned a lot about the East African interconnection landscape and we would like to thank RINEX for an inspiring week!

Internet Security Days: Encryption Must Be Suitable for the Masses

  • Cryptography products are not user-friendly enough

  • Internet Security Days presents new technologies for protection of digital identity

  • Tickets available: Early Bird Tariff available until 11.08.2016

Every Internet user has a vested interest in the security of their personal data. For the transfer and sharing of sensitive information, security should be an absolutely fundamental requirement. And yet, cryptography is barely ever used in everyday life – or even in business– because the applications are too complicated and time-consuming. Security experts will explain the dangers this situation poses – and elaborate on the conditions required for wide distribution of encryption – at the Internet Security Days on 22 and 23 September in Phantasialand in Bruel, near Cologne.

The security conference is being organized this year by eco – Association of the Internet Industry for the first time in collaboration with Heise Medien. Speakers like the cryptography specialist Klaus Schmeh and the cyber-crime expert Mikko Hyppönen are eagerly awaited. Visitors can take advantage of the early-bird price for tickets to the conference until 11 August 2016.

Security in the cloud and in the Internet of Things

Further focuses of the security event will be security for the cloud and for IoT, two technologies where sensitive data often needs to be transferred and stored, and which are therefore subject to higher security standards. Due to the increasing spread of these technologies, and the creation of entire economic sectors that are dependent on them, new products and strategies are necessary to take account of these developments.

Cyber-crime endangers society as a whole

However, cyber security does not only play an important role for the economy – it’s also vital for the home computer. In times where power grids, nuclear power stations and traffic lights are all digitally linked, cyber security must be understood as a responsibility for society as a whole. As a result, a further emphasis will be placed on this topic, with presentations on the darknet, nation state attacks, and cyber war. The program will largely be conducted in the German language.
